The Carytown Watermelon Festival has been a Richmond institution since the early 80's, and when Jack pulled some strings & bent some ears to get the Illbillys invited to play this year, it seemed like a slam-dunk opportunity! An unpaid opportunity maybe, but a chance to play for an estimated 100,000 people! Wellll...being in Richmond in August, one can pretty regularly expect it to be 175° with 300% humidity, plus the Illbillys were placed on a little sloping strip of grass next to a 7-11 that was more suited to the many one- and two-man acts that were playing that day.
The sound system and sound guy were both a bit silly (one being miniscule and the other being vastly intoxicated), but a respectable crowd of sweaty passersby gathered for the 45-minute performance, including an excellent representation of Illbilly friends 'n' family members. Will the Illbillys play at the 27th annual Watermelon Festival? I suppose anything is possible.
