Since there's no bass for about the first minute of this song, Peter finds himself onstage with nothing to do while the rest of the band is playing. This is the reason he picked UP an instrument in the first place, and chose NOT to be just a singer (because lord KNOWS his golden pipes could support such a conceit): so that he could be onstage, DOING something productive at all times, as opposed to standing there, ocasionally singing, but otherwise being a carbon dioxide-emitting device and not much else. Over the year that the Illbillys have played "Copperhead Road," Peter has experimented with sword-swallowing, fire-walking and snake charming to keep himself occupied during this excruciating minute of forced inactivity, but eventually settled on obnoxiously taking pictures of JB and the rest of the band with his phone.
