Joe's addition to the Illbillys also added an unexpected universe of sonic improvements to the band. Visible here is a little wired grey thing in JB's ear, not connecting him to a gaggle of handlers reading him the lyrics of each song just before he sings them as one might expect, but instead replacing the necessity of FLOOR MONITORS, those huge, rumbling devices at a bandmember's feet that exist so that that bandmember might hear what he and the rest of the band are doing. With the use of these in-ear monitors, JB, Peter and Joe each get their own tailored mix of the music in their own little aural world, while simultaneously being completely unable to hear what anyone else is saying, unless it's spoken directly into a wired microphone. Such is the price of perfection.
